It's been well over a year since my last post in Moab Utah, living in a hogan. Well I'm still living off the grid, hoo-ray! BUT 5 miles from the lava flow on the Big Island of Hawaii... in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. So i post a video recently completed, a highlight of the HICCUP children's circus at S.P.A.C.E. at Belly Acres where Stacy and I are staying these days... en artistic eco village founded by jugglers and circus performers in the 80's... cool! so these kids are the product of the vision of these original members. Enjoy!

Dear Cyberspace,

while i seek to understand your quantum quirks, i see more truth sometimes in the simplicity of our natural world. from february 2009 to April 2009, I lived in a navajo hogan, with the Colorado river as my front yard, and miles of red rock fins as my backyard. off the grid, no water or electricty... i simply loved it. i noticed that the space of the hogan, literally its dome shape contained an energy ive never felt in a living space before. something nuturing... motherly, perhaps. and not only that, but i connected to a love shared among all who are in this space. the outer parts of the hogan where domed as well... and it reminds me of my mother's sweet medicine teachings... to dome an area as a sacred space. this space most definitely was sacred. i only desire to one day be back in an alternative living space similar to this one. enjoy the tour of the hogan.

Back in Moab, staying at Ali's house. sleeping in scott's bed. and the desert has welcomed me home with an elated embrace. i love moab. she already has whispered to me whereabouts my spirit needs to be. and its here. sigh. i know moab. and i am ready to start advancing my life, and also stay in paradise as long as i can. quality of life.

ive been reading The human condition and In search of Schrodinger's cat... im ready to invite more science in... and i plan to finish the photography and alternative proceses packet from mr. robert schaller. and i plan to write a treatment/screenplay for Erosion.

What is Erosion? well.... the film i am developing... to potentially shoot, on 16mm the right way....

An experimental narrative, lesbian western, in relation to human evolution, by examining the intersection between erosion and eroticism. this film will be a conceptual sculpture of earth, light, water, and celluloid, developed as a southwest love story in search of its own truth.

and the love story takes place between a young mormon girl, displaced within her family, and an older Navajo woman, expediting to find her roots.

i dig it. we'll see what this grows into. im into the idea of erosion as body of earth, and eroticism as human body in contact with the elements. examining womblike canyons, water agent, wind, time, sun, and love.

Sundance Film Festival 2009

Volunteering in the IT dept. at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah... is quite the experience. today is my last day of official IT work... and the festival begins on friday.... so technically i have the whole festival off... with a volunteer credential that will get me into pretty much everything... and at least 14 free film passes.... i have a cozy place to stay for free! with a woman who i shockingly havent met yet... but she lovingly offered her home to me. ive met several awesome people in the IT dept... ive been hanging out with Abbey, from chicago and Nigeria. we will see what the shizzle is here.

Im here. in moab utah. USA. i didnt think id still be here. but i am... and am trying to make the most of it. in the us that is. I floated here, moab, from a bit of west coast travel in an effort to try to understand my own country, and my participation with it. i realize i will always be an american. so i might as well, embrace what i can, and im pretty sure that i am actually doing it. i am living in moab in the red rock deserts of tranquility and brutality, sandwiched between the la sal mountains and the san rafael swell, we are in paradise. this really is paradise. the main problem now, is how to continue filmmaking, live a passionate life and experience a plethora of new things, gain new skills, and connect with new people. i think im doing ok so far. sadly no lovers, only moab. my dear. no concrete new skills... only my life which everyday feels like vacation. like mike said. every day feels like vacation.its so true. but im making money, friends, experiences.. i dont know what else to say... im possibly buying a truck on tuesday... so there is another real commitment. learning and being responsible for a car! a diesel... so i can turn it into a vegidiesel... and run on waste vegi oil... for free. big commitment... and then who knows i might get a dog. eeesh.. seriously who knows.. maybe i will know when the right step is supposed to happen. maybe it will no matter what. and im just along for the ride basically. that life is directing me and im along for the ride... it seems to be pulling me sometimes and sometimes to let me be... to relax and soak up life. so for now i am relaxing and soaking up life. a different life. mika is finally out in the desert. and i am not wasting any of my life. it is all precious. every day of it. the light is precious. i must keep some of that light with me.. in the future. i think i can probably capture that light into my celluloid. i seriously think i should stay here and film all winter. a new film. in black and white... plus x. the desert in the winter... it can have actors. i can film the land. my bolex works great, i have film .. there is no excuse now. i must. i must have a car to take me places to film. i think that is the next step. a little at time. what really makes me passionate about the desert. its ocean of time...its memories... that haunt the land. its sunsets and magical sunrises. the peace here. that the rest of the world may never know. the peace of the land. we are honed to respect and honor the land, and she provides quite fruitfully for us., we have the purest water at matrimony springs, the best produce, the best farmers. goat cheese. we are set. and if moab can prove to me that she loves me back... we then id say i have a girlfriend, and that im in love. are you that to me moab? just let me know. whisper to me how you feel about me. just a whisper.

The rebirth of "the death of cleopatra"
shooting went phenonmenally well of the recasting event! we had so many wonderful people around to help with casting and filming. this is a few minute segment of the most intense part of the process. mixing the polyurethane liquid foam parts for 30 seconds before it starts to rapidly expand 18 to 1 ! by the time we got the fourth bucket in... we were pushing the top of the mold to keep the material in, only to be splattered by this toxic polymer.... i think it was a fun event for all... something new no doubt. the 16mm we shot turned out beautifully.. with some minor fogging on some parts... which i still havent figured out why... mysterious... anyways, this film is coming together... ive got to start editing pretty soon here. today. here's to keeping my mind open, for the film to guide me to new places... i learned that sometimes accidents are what turn out the best, and control can be stifling to what the medium seeks to do....

diario del primer rodaje...
underway... after a last minute, mold (as in decay and fiberglass shell) crisis... today i think all is resolved and we are proceeding with casting her majesty, the last pharaoh of Egypt. we are filming tomorrow, sat. and sunday march 15th and 16th in a dynamic, and industrial sculpture studio. i must say that i really like working with these other materials, thinking dimensionally, instead of temporal moving images. i am reminded that sculpture is also a temporal medium... in its spacial experience... the time of viewing, and also in its own finite life. in a lot of ways, cinema and sculpture are very similar.... so tomorrow... i think all i need to be worried about... are shots. framing, lighting... making sure the film captures... the event. pouring white expanding liquid into her... to fill her joints, and crevices, to give her a life... pretty soon there will be two of her. ive become so attached to this beautiful amber fiberglass mold, spent a lot of time with her, then abandoned her... i dont know what exactly it will feel like for me... to realize her birth in positive form... and not the negative, ive been working with up to this point.

here is my next huge project underway for adv. 16mm film production. a 7 minute film, conceptually, an examination of the process of replication in the
likeness of. drawing from ancient Egyptian cultural history, and
intersecting with the ancient and modern practices of dentistry, the
film will be part the process of recasting of a statue of Cleopatra
depicting her death, suicide by an Egyptian cobra and part
rephotographing images of tooth decay in pregnant women. the film will
focus around the desire for reproduction, from the original (shell or
skin) to the replica, to preserve immortality.

This video is my archeological detective research of this mold. commentary included.

starting up the old motor.... vvvrrrrrruuoooooommmmmm............. getting those creative juices going again.... fighting the world a little right now... fighting some people in my life right now... mostly fighting myself. i have my first intermedia project due in 1 week... and i think i just got my idea.... with some film i shot in patagonia... and selected readings from Charles Darwin's diary of the beagle and of Julio Popper's diary in spanish on his early expeditions... i will
compose a mystical journey of an early expedition into patagonia... this sounds very jackie goss.. esque.... i like it. she made me feel like i can be creating video and art for my whole life and the world will be better... when she came last year to iowa... that night was more inspiring than many other nights have been.... anywhoozle.... i will perhaps animate a bit of this as well.... rotoscope??? maybe... i will need to find some video of explorers... hmmmm.... and some found sound... of seagulls and wind in the desert..... and glaciars breaking off perhaps... maybe i can cross cut some of the expedition with my expedition into patagnoia... some of my fotos... :)... IT CAN BE PERSONAL... :) so first... i must transfer the super8 film to video... damn... i should've already sent that to be transferred to lost in light ... well i can fix it up later.. i suppose.... film whatever video i need for this... read and select writings... act them on video... maybe try and find some clothing...... and a ship... lisa has a telescope.. my front porch can be a ship... i think...or on my roof...on a cloudy day... blown out. blues.... very blue..... ok... the animation i need to do on friday... and saturday. this is serious... i can definitly blue screen some of this. so sound is important... this is what brainstorming is all about... :)

Patagonia, mi querido.
estoy en Puerto Madryn esta mañana, y finalmente puedo decir que estoy en Patagonia. hace 3 dias estaba en Bariloche pero en realidad, se llama la region de los lagos... ah bueno. hace frio un polar aca y creo que un poco mas en Bariloche... pero lo sabia. mi viaje continua asi: dos dias en puerto madryn, pocos horas en ruta en rio gallegos, despues 2 o 3 dias en el calafate, y lo demas en ushuaia, tengo miedo que no voy a quedar mas de 2 o 3 dias en ushuaia... vamos a ver.

blogging and vlogging is somewhat harder than i thought it would be... i guess i have more on my mind in this point of my life. but im seeking to get my creativity back on track eventually... hmmm eventually. being creative and travelling is definitly a challenge... there is little time and energy for art im finding. so much energy goes into organizing... and trying to see and do as much as possible in little time.. that rest comes first... and then energy for creation i guess is next... no sé. journalling is so important. and i am journalling a lot. more than a few times a day. trying to figure this mind of mine out. to locate this self that we all have.. but dont know where to find it... but still desire to find it. always searching.... im learning about love. about friendship. about language. about human connections. about education. about politics. about. about. about. about. where i can be in the world and feel comfortable. damn people anxiety. no good.
travelling alone has been good to me. and i am seeking to be removed from most people actually. sight seeing, animals, nature, museums, art, cine.... beaches... mountains... just looking and thinking... erase these people-... and let the ones who are important guide me in some way... but i dont need anyone right now... and i have never felt more sure of this.
(but at the same time.... desiring to be home) as a differnt person.

Protesta al obelisco

Well about a week and a half ago on april 10th, all of the university classes were cancelled because a series of protests and demonstrations by public school teachers broke out in the province of Neuquen the week before. The protesters shut down a bunch of major roads and were disrupting the important Semana Santa (Holy Week) tourist weekend. So the governor of Neuquen ordered the police to shut them down. Everything came to a head when a tear gas canister canister fired by the cops "accidentally" struck and killed a chemistry teacher. There is speculation that it was intentional.

so then in buenos aires, young and old at the drop of a hat seem ready to organize a protest in the city. they must all just keep their protest gear ready by the front door. i was amazed how common it is to have the city practically shut down because of student protests. it made me think, why dont the young people have this kind of rallying power and potential anymore in the US? the young people here really place themselves within their political system.

i am trying to remember what i did yesterday and it only resemblers a blur. i feel as if most of the days here blur. trying to recollect... woke up late, spent the day in class, then to IES to go on the internet. Hannah and i went to a swanky hotel in el Centro because we thought there would be a feminine literary performance... not this thursday. drank some mate on my balcony and watched the traffic as the sun was just going down. ate dinner with my host mother and we actually had a semi good conversation.. i´m realizing maybe there are things that i can learn from her. she is an outgoing woman, very loud. i´m not. perhaps she is challenging me... and i must accept this challenge to be a little louder and prouder if i want to actually enjoy this living environment. later i had a few cervezas at a friends apt. as we planned our spring break trip up to nothern argentina. Que Bárbaro!

i am definitely encountering life lessons here.. some on solitud and the means i have to change myself here. simply feeling alone here is hopefully enough to help me utilize what i do and do not want to feel, and how to change. i am learning to relax, little by little... big lesson for me. mostly i am trying not to miss the wonderful people and good times from iowa city. i guess maybe i´m constantly wishing i was somewhere else. always moving.. wanting to move... travelling.. like the kokopelli... the hunchedback flute playing traveller... bringing fertility to the villages... so as i travel i should bring fertility with me. i am learning the importance of relationships in my life... and to value being a giving person... working on this every day... the water is still in buenos aires.

week 7 i think in buenos aires. i think i am hitting the depression curve. so why do i choose to blog it? i dont know. to get it out of me. all of a sudden, the film festival BAFICI has ended and i feel so lonely and uninspired. my new friend fancisca somewhat mentioned this is what happens to her after the film festival... but i didnt really believe her. yep it does.

i feel an incredible sense of unbelonging. spanish is still very difficult, hard to see where i am improving. i miss things at iowa. have an unfortunate housing situation. just different obstacles i didnt plan to encounter. 3 more months. push forward.

BAFICI writeup coming soon. the festival was the highlight of BsAs for me so far. i hope not by the end.

week 4 in Buenos Aires. i think i am actually starting to adjust more or less. according to the student adjustment chart for study abroad... there is a steep depression coming soon. that will be interesting. its nice to know someone could tell me that before right? like i fit in the mold.
yesterday i actually found a climbing gym called Realization. all bouldering. it was pretty cool. i realized... all of my muscle has depleted and i will have to work back up again. ho k. but its pretty cheap and they have lessons for = U$S 3 hopefully well get to go on some trips into the andes soon.

im undecided how i want this blog-vlog to be. i like blogging. but i like the idea of it being only a video blog. but then i dont ever have enough time or technology to actually get videos up on time... hmmm hybrid perhaps. there is a neat cemetary here i would like to vlog, where eva peron is burried, and also... i kinda want to animate argentine meat dancing tango... jan svankmayer style... si posible.

pucon, Chile

Climbing el volcan villarica in pucon, Chile proved to be a difficult 7 hours of my life. 5 hours to the crater, where magma bubbled below the level that we could see...and 2 hours sliding down the side in snow and ice tubed slides. enjoying my lunch of bread and cheese and bananas was particularly dangerous sitting on a steep incline. the trek zig zagged up the volcano at an angle of 60 degreees!!! ahhhhh!!!! alst the while our spanish speaking guide repeated "vamos" and " que honda loca" ( whats up crazy girl)

after much struggle to recover my blogger password... i am back on the net from the beautiful (sometimes) city of Buenos Aires. i have few videos to post from chile and BsAs so far... they will come. i am also working on posting pictures on flickr. all works in progress. So i recently stumbled upon two amazing things in Barrio San Telmo. la universidad del cine, with ah mazing ciclos del cine every week! AND a super 8 supplier and processing co. in a cute apartment. my new goals include making friends with some argentine cinema students and learn everything i can about the material of super8 film... perhaps some kind of apprenticeship... is in order.

a brief overview of Sudamerica
highlights of chile:
cute beach town pichilemu, el volcan villarica and the crater at the icy top, millions of free range stray dogs of every shape and size. gypsies who read your palm for monedas... or try to. the gorgeous german settled port town valparaiso where houses are crammed together on hills and painted every vibrant color of the rainbow and children ride skateboards to the bottom... screaming. i love it.

highlights and lowlights of Buenos Aires:
dog poop everywhere, but fewer dogs than chile. la feria recoleta- hippies sell their crafts. i met a man from australia who is a world boomerrang champion. the beautiful beach town and home to mar del plata film festival, actually all of the amazing film cycles here are increible! oh yeah, school is ok too.

in a goodbye iowa city- hello martha berner saturday night bash, magic happened.... or something of the like. Martha Berner, a guitar jammin-harp playin-vocalist from Chicago passed through iowa city feb. 10 and shared an evening with the locals.
she's like our friend.
and yes, that is me on harmonica.

any-hoozle, i'm off to Santiago, Chile and Buenos Aires, Argentina. i'm in a weird nervous, excited, sad, ripple in time right now... the next few days will fly by... and then i will fly bye. As casually as i can drop this here... is how stressed out i really am.... and its weird to write to no one except cyberspace... hmmm? (im trying to encourage comments... let me know you watch :) )

Soy Milk Makes Kids Gay

Jim Rutz posted on Dec. 12, 2006 in response to the book titled The Whole Soy Story, that not only is this health food, unhealthy.... but it also makes kids gay because of estrogen like hormones called Isoflavones (this sounds made up to me). The entire article is here. So i hate to be super skeptical but to me it seems like this conservative homophobic scientist needs to prove something. he's using science, something which we "understand" to be factual... to support his own fears of gender blending.
apparently there is a lot of this soy research surfacing now, and this worries me. the FDA is going to be posting warning labels on soy products soon warning mothers of giving their children extra estrogen. if soy milk is unhealthy, then fine... but anything in excess is unhealthy. this frustrates me immensly.

news flash! news flash!
i will be leaving this country in 1 month! I will be travelling to Chile for 2 weeks and then on to Buenos Aires, Argentina for 6 months.... i will be a student. I will probably want to do everything BUT go to class. I will video blog.
I really am unsure of what to expect on this journey. Primarily, I desire to be ripped from this bubble we call university, and the bubble i live in called Iowa City. I seek to perhaps discover some harsh realities, about myself and others. My goal is to track emotional stages with a journal vlog... and a report events and experiences vlog...and a track my spanish (improvement) vlog. maybe more.... so hopefully i will find the time to actively practice donating video to the cyberworld.

To my parents and friends that watch... i appreciate any and all support--- just by watching.... and comments or advice are of the essence.

So i've been heavy on intermedia this semester, with more time to explore my identity as an artist, and with concepts that fascinate me. This was my first collaborative installation, with Miriam and Mandy and ocurred in early November. By the end of the night, the whole class was suckling on the flavored water gloves, very fun and vulnerable...

To me, the dank but warm basement was an eerie safe space to be, almost womblike. This center column, didn’t replicate our ideas exactly with the video projection, but the moving blue light contrasted the hot yellow floodlight nicely. My feelings for the installation are of natural energy and healing. The gloves filled with flavored water encourage suckling, a return to an infant state, a return to mother nature, perhaps. There is an intense energy vibrating around the column and while it may not be obvious what it is and why you look at it, I think the room depends on it being there as a nurturing energy.

Undergrad Intermedia Open howse!

Sorry, for my lameness blogosphere. Being an undergrad, free time is of the essence. Videoblogging, unfortunately must come after critical reading and viewing among the other classes.

BUT... intermedia fortunately can be distributed throughout the vlogosphere as you will see here.

an installation from the open house last night at the international building on campus! imagine around 50 artists showing their work in the form of video, installation, sound, and performance all in a crowded space of a few floors! its the craziest party on campus, with free food and live nude. ;)

any who my installation is called Jellied Preserves and mediates on the preservation of time and life, while recognizing that decay can be beautiful as well. here is a short video of the space.

flex was a success! i just wanted to say that because it almost rhymes. but yes it is over. what a festival. i think Roger Beebe and the flexies put on a great festival! i had a great time overall hanging out with other filmmakers and being put up for a weeekend. at times maybe a little "festival blues" (as Katja called it) i think mostly being so much younger and less accomplished than the other filmmakers may have played a part in my comfort level.... BUT i learned so much and so inspired by many amzing films from all over the world... including 8 from iowa! go iowa! everyone was really impressed with the work coming out of iowa too... i also did my part in talking up our program.

guess what blogosphere? i'm at the florida experimental film festival in gainsville FL this weekend! My film Lyrical Hermonies is screening on Sunday. So far so good! the programs began last night and go through sunday, and then its back to iowa for me. but while i'm here i'm going to 1. enjoy the weather 2. enjoy the amazing and inspirational films i see 3. enjoy the amazing company of fellow filmmakers (heck maybe learn something!)

From the first screening last night here are things that stood out to me:
films are a mix or mini dv and 16mm and super 8
experimental film + experimental music = ? is this a combination that is supposed to work?
i really liked Whirr and Harmony a lot... i noticed that i begin a film expecting it to be good and sometimes lie to myself to validate watching it that it actually was great. so i guess i could be more critical with myself to understand what i value in a film. note to self: learn from charlotte
lots of time lapse... always visually interesting... especially when a unique scene.
also all of the filmmakers here are awesome! i can't wait to get to know them all!
i'm staying at the hospitality coordinator's house, Lynn. which is super nice of her to put up the filmmakers.

So this is a little piece of nostalgia and of what i know about my grandpa PG (paternal grandfather[ even though he is my mother's father???] ). I origionally made this for an intermedia class, so i was trying out some different stuff that i am not used to, like stop motion, and print transfers, hand painting, and most of the material in this video is dug up from my grandparents dungeony basement... where my grandpa also practiced dentistry. he was quite the famous dentist, i'm finding out... also ginkos were his horticultural passion...and they inhance memory. think about it.

welp, internet is hard for me to come across so i fear i only can post a few times a week... and hard to over weekends. anyhizzle, i made a short video of the annual take back the night protest march in iowa city this past thursday. i had never gone before, but had always heard of it from all of my feministfriends. all in all it was a good experience. a couple things erked me about the tradition... well i guess the main thing i noticed was that after the protest, i was super paranoid of every male i saw walking home that night, and i've never felt that way in iowa city. does awareness come with this price? does it have to? i cant help but think it is naive of me to even pretend to feel safe. but..honestly i have always felt safe in iowa city.

after the march and hearing women speak of how they have been abused.... instead of empowering me, it made me incredibly depressed, i wonder if this was the same for others.

Apocalypse?

I made this video in August, after feeling a lack of creativity this past summer and an intense desire to try rotoscoping. first rotoscope ever. and yes i went frame by frame... i think it ended up being over 400 frames. it took about two weeks working about 8 days at 6 hours a day... that's... what 48 hrs... well i guess that's not too bad. my friend Charlotte spent 96 hrs. on a 9 sec. rotoscope once. that's crazy!

i just finished a deliscious breakfast at the Cottage, of tomato and spinach quiche. so i guess the spinach scare is over. that's good. the morning is dreary, wet, and cold. stupid me, i wore my chacos thinking i'd be ok. my feet are freezing.

this is my vlog. vlog vlog vlog vlog... it just rolls off the tongue. i am very excited to be starting this! Thanks to Jen Proctor, Aaron Valdez and Iowa City Microcinema for having an amazing weekend of video blogging events. attendence was low... unfortunately. but i think the people that were there did gain a lot of insight and inspiration from visiting vloggers Chuck Olsen and Chris Weagel.
So what does Video Blogging mean to me? well, #1 as a film student i see this as a valuable outlet and reason to keep practicing short form filmmaking, and especially experimenting... with no consequences. #2 to see the world that others present themselves in is very fascinating. #3 people like watching videos over reading to get their news information, well i do anyways... newspapers frustrate me.

so i will blog. and i will vlog. and it will be good.
